Manganese, derived from the Latin word for magnet, is an element that can exhibit +7 and +2 oxidation states. It is found in nature as MnO2 and MnO4.
It is widely used in steel production. However, recently, manganese compounds have begun to be used in the production of lithium-ion batteries.
In 2017, 250,000 tons of compounds containing the element manganese were used in batteries worldwide. In the lithium-ion battery market, manganese-containing types account for a 22% share.
In the long term, the production of batteries containing manganese is expected to increase further.
It is obtained by mixing electrolytic manganese dioxide with lithium metal. The crystalline structure of the electrolytic manganese compound is preserved. This process results in the formation of a lithiated electrolytic manganese compound.
